HIDDEN HUNGERS

Often our eating habits go much deeper than the choices we make with the foods we eat. Many of us are emotional eaters and use food for comfort, stimulation or for temporary satisfaction. When we use our habits and patterns to explore the feelings behind them we just might be surprised what we find. Dr. Mary Hulnick from the University of Santa Monica says that often behind our eating patterns there are “Hidden Hungers”. The next time you find yourself running to the fridge with a strong craving (especially if you are not particularly hungry) take a moment to ask yourself, “What am I feeling in this moment? What is it I am truly craving and wanting? What, besides this particular food, can I give myself to satisfy my hidden hunger?”. Take a moment to write down whatever is present for you. Acknowledge your feelings and acknowledge yourself for being present. You have just taken the first step to true satisfaction.
